Runners gathered at the Kanawha City start as weather threaten to dampen the course. Then just like last year the skies opened up and cooled the runners with a spring shower.

Despite the gray skies and wet conditions 105 runners and 17 walkers patiently listened to prerace instructions of the 15th Run with a Cop 5K. Uniformed members of Charleston's finest lead the way with blue lights flashing.

While the uniformed officers kept the runners safe other members of our local police force competed to help raise money for the race's Special Olympics charity. The bad guys better be on the lookout because there are some fast guys in blue.

Donald Peal's sub 20 minute time of 19.54.9 is going to win any foot chase. Daniel Johnson and Peter Kapeluck rounded out the the police division with times of 21.45.4 and 22.17.2, respectively.

It's a good thing that Brian Floyd is a good guy because he couldn't be caught and was the 1st across the finish line with a time of 16.15.9. He was chased to the 5k mark buy Chuck Dent (16.40.6). Who was almost caught by Adam Coon (16.46.9).

Cathy Hill ran a strong, smooth 23.20.5 to be the 1st female across the line. Followed by Nicole Michaelis (23.34.8) and Lois Gillenwater (24.51.8).

In a class by herself, Stephanie Adams was the lone female registered in the Police division and completed the 5k in 29.28.2.

The Celebrate Independence Race is the last race in the Spring/Summer Series. This race has a festive start near Hadaad Riverfront Park with a 7:45 pm gun time. Get there early to enjoy live music on the levee and stay late for a beautiful sunset on the river.
